The Environmental Officer?s primary duties are to ensure that the
ship is in compliance with all applicable local, state, federal,
and international environmental laws and regulations. The
Environmental Officer reports directly to the Master for
environmental compliance related issues with a direct reporting
relationship to the Director of Environmental Compliance and Injury
Prevention. For all other shipboard matters, the Environmental
Officer will report to the Staff Captain.
Career snapshot:
* Monitors and evaluates shipboard implementation of environmental
and select public health policies and programs
* Ensures that the oil and hazmat spill response equipment is ready
for immediate use and is properly stowed and marked
* Completes waste vendor due diligence surveys and site inspections
in cooperation with Environmental Stewardship
* Maintains records on shipboard activities related to company
environmental policies, procedures, and programs including the
status of environmental management programs and training which
occurs on board, and provides weekly reports to the Master and
Environmental Stewardship Department
* Evaluates shipboard environmental systems to determine
criticality of system defects/failures and recommends contingency
plans. Verifies the functionality of the bilge water treatment and
overboard discharge systems weekly together with the engineer in
charge as per AMOS.
